BIO

HomePageMsteenArtI have several series that I work on and display simultaneously. They are mostly abstract paintings, dominated by watercolor and inspired by nature. My Passage Series and Quilt Series have much collage incorporated into them. I use handmade paper, found objects, and scraps of memorabilia that have personal significance such as buttons, a piece of clothing, sticks, and textured material. All of these pieces add dimension and meaning to the flat surface on which I am painting. For these series, I paint on all kinds of heavy watercolor paper and lately on boards called clayboards. I also have a Thicket Series, which is contemporary in feel, but has a more direct, organic inspiration from the flora and fauna around us.

In my work, I acknowledge the existence of struggle or pain. However, I want my paintings to be ultimately hopeful and beautiful. I want the people looking at my work to be drawn into it. I want them to take a moment from their day to enjoy the interplay between color, line and texture, and hope that they Aind this brief respite rewarding.

I graduated from Washington University School of Fine Art and after raising my family, turned to the outdoor art show scene. I have taught at Washington University Fine Arts Institute and I have been a visiting artist at various organizations and schools. My demonstrations and lectures have included Washington University, the Ethical Society of Saint Louis, East Central College and the
University of Missouri St. Louis

My work has been published in several books, they are:

  • Book Jackets for The Well-Tempered Teacher by Elyse Mach, et.al., Shirmer Books
  • Water media Techniques for Releasing the Creative Spirits by Marilyn H. Phyllis
  • Book Jacket for Basics of Singing by Jan Schmidt, Schirmer Books
  • Book Jacket for The Politics and Poetics of Passage in Canadian and Australian
